Happy 2018! With the beginning of a new year there are always forecasts about the latest and greatest movements and trends that I always find so amusing. I am sure there are industries and professions out there that consider this information vital to their success, but I am definitely not one of them. An example of this is the anticipated annoucement of the Pantone color of the year. Ultra Violet??? What?! Am I the only person left who dispises the color purple? Why do we need a color of the year? I happen to love all the colors....with the exception of that one.

I often get advice from people about following these trends in order to be more profitable. Maybe not following these trends does hinder my success on etsy, or how many views I get on instagram, or how many pieces of my art I actually do sell. Following them though would feel like I was being untrue to myself. At this point in my journey I feel that I have to find my own way and listen to my own internal compass. I have the luxury of being able to take my time with my self discovery as an artist and to not worry about the latest trends. If anything, I take inspiration in the old. I love looking through books of my favorite Bauhaus artists, I love hunting through isles at the thrift store, I love vintage children’s books illustration, and I love digging through estate sale boxes.

While I definitely have goals that I hope to hit, I have no idea where this year will take me. I’m going to continue pushing myself to try new mediums and work outside my comfort zone, but I don’t intend to do that by following trends or using someone else’s ideas of what may lead to my success. I wish you year of prosperity in your endeavors in 2018, and appreciate you following along on my adventure.
